A Straightforward Mechanical Spacer for O2 Sensor Applications

This is a 45mm O2 sensor spacer built to the standard M18x1.5 thread — the same size used on the O2 sensor bung of most gas-powered vehicles. It’s a purely mechanical part: no catalyst core, no chemical treatment of exhaust gas. What it does is reposition the O2 sensor slightly away from the direct exhaust stream, which is the basis for a few common uses below.

How It’s Typically Used

On OBD-II vehicles (1996+), the ECU relies on two O2 sensors — one before the catalytic converter for air/fuel tuning, and one after it to confirm the converter is functioning. The rear sensor checks for a measurable difference in exhaust readings between the two; if it doesn’t see that difference, the ECU assumes the catalytic converter is missing or damaged and triggers a check engine light (in some cases even limiting vehicle performance).

Spacing the rear sensor slightly out of the direct exhaust path changes what it reads, which is why this style of spacer is commonly paired with:

  • HHO systems, where the added hydrogen/oxygen mix can throw off O2 readings
  • Test pipes, where the catalytic converter has been removed for diagnostics or track use
  • General O2-sensor-related CEL troubleshooting, as a low-cost mechanical adjustment before assuming a sensor is bad

Set Realistic Expectations

Results vary by vehicle, exhaust layout, and how the ECU is tuned. This spacer works well for many setups, but it’s not a guaranteed fix for every check engine light — if your code was triggered before installing, some ECUs will need a reset afterward, and a small number of vehicles may still cycle the light intermittently. Installation

  1. Unscrew the existing O2 sensor from the exhaust.
  2. Thread the sensor into the spacer.
  3. Screw the assembled unit back into the bung.
